Festival of Quilts 2018
Yesterday I attended the Festival of Quilts in Auckland. This is the first time I have entred any quilts into a show that was to be judged. I had entred a number over the years as a junior member when I was a lot younger and living in Auckland. But since moving to Whangarei I hadn’t thought about joining the guild till I had attended the Festival last year.
Earlier in the week I had received a phone call to say I better be at prize giving because my quilt had won an award. I am absolutely over the moon! My goal this year was to enter, and to have won something in my first year of entering is just mind blowing.
My quilt Prismatic Refraction
This was a quilt I had been working on since the last Festival and had been collecting fabrics for some time (as we all seem to do). I had two other quilts in the show and I was wanting to enter a third, I took two quilt tops down to one of my local quilt shops and asked for their opinion. They both said this one, and this was also backed up by my hubby (one month out from hand in day). I was still quilting and sewing down the binding at 1am on hand in day and hand sewing the binding at guild moments before I handed it in.
It is a batik colour wash based on the pattern “Kaleidoscope” with the addition of a number of white on white and creams to create a beautiful secondary pattern.
These were the other two quilts I put into the show
Dark side of the Rainbow (Double Trouble pattern by Libs Elliot) and Autumnal Equinox (Feather Bed Quilt by Anna Maria)

What an experience this was, unfortunately as we had to travel so far I didn’t get an opportunity to purchase any fabric (I know what a sin) but I look forward to building on the techniques I have learnt this year as I get ready for the Festival of Quilts in 2020. Next year is Symposium and I think I will go and enjoy what they have on offer.
Till next time
